Every child has an egg in their heart, unseen at first, an egg with the would-be self of their dreams. Hinamori Amu, part of a group called the Guardians, protect those eggs from becoming x-eggs, eggs filled with resentment and resignation that gives children troubles. Amu’s job is to capture and restore x-eggs to their orginal form. She does this with the help of her three Shugo Chara (guardian characters or her would be selves), Ran, Miki and Su. Thanks to them she can change her character and abilities, and so fight against the mysterious organization Easter which aim is to find a special egg called Embryo using the x-eggs.

However, these young men and parts of the rest of their family (both close and distant) hold a curse; if they are hugged by the opposite gender, they transform into animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Everyday is an adventure for sweet Tohru, as she gets to know everyone in the large family better (especially Yuki and Kyo), in both common and bizarre situations. But, the Sohma Family curse is certainly no laughing matter… it also holds horrible cruelity and heartbreak.

Manga Publisher Tokyopop Lays Off Eight More Staffers

The Beat blog of the Publishers Weekly trade magazine confirmed with Marc Pavia, the marketing director at the manga publisher Tokyopop, that eight more Tokyopop staffers were laid off this week. Pavia cited the recent, dramatically low sales in the publishing industry

as the cause. Pavia acknowledges that Tokyopop will have to space its upcoming releases for some titles, and the company plans on providing more details later. Pavia emphasizes, “Tokyopop is still in business, and we are still focusing on our core business.”

These layoffs come after Tokypop restructured its organization and laid off 39 other employees in June. The Beat reported last week that another seven employees, including an editor, the chief technological officer, the human resources manager, and two more from its Media division, were laid off last month.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

The official website for the anime adaptation of the Phantom of Inferno suspense visual novel software announced on Wednesday that a manga version is also being developed. The official blog of Media Factory’s Monthly Comic Alive magazine editors confirmed the news and revealed that Masaki Hīragi (Shōnen Maid Kūro-kun) will draw the manga based on the software from Nitroplus. The manga will be previewed in Comic Alive’s February issue, which ships in Japan on December 27. The manga will actually launch on January 27 in the March issue.

Kadokawa Shoten’s Newtype magazine had announced this past week that Nitroplus and writer Gen Urobuchi (Blassreiter) are adapting their visual novel as a television anime series under the title Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (pictured at right). The original visual novel software was previously adapted in 2004 as a three-volume video anime series, Phantom – The Animation. Media Blasters released this earlier anime series under its AnimeWorks label in 2006.

Minami-ke Original Animation DVD Reportedly Green-Lit

A flyer has reported announced that a new Minami-ke original animation DVD has been green-lit for release on June 23 in Japan. A limited edition of the sixth volume of Coharu Sakuraba’s Minami-ke manga will bundle the DVD. The animation studio asread will produce the episode, which will run about 25 minutes. Minami-ke tells the story of three sisters who live on their own and depend on each other to solve whatever problems may arise. Rina Satou (Haruka Minami), Marina Inoue (Kana Minami), and Minori Chihara (Chiaki Minami) will reprise their roles as the three sisters in this DVD and in the Minami-ke: Okaeri television series that will premiere in Japan on January 4.

Mamoru Oshii’s Musashi Samurai Film Teaser Streamed

The official Japanese website for Miyamoto Musashi: Sōken ni Haseru Yume (Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai), the Production I.G samurai anime film scheduled for early next summer, has launched with a teaser trailer on Friday. Award-winning anime creator and director Mamoru Oshii (Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell, The Sky Crawlers) is developing and writing the film. The website says that the film will deal with “the fact and fiction about the Niten Ichi-ryū of Musashi Miyamoto, the seeker of the way of the invincible sword.” Miyamoto is a legendary swordsmen who pioneered the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū style of two-sword fighting and wrote The Book of Five Rings, a book that has been compared to Sun Tzu’s The Art of War for its insight on tactics and strategy.

Mizuho Nishikubo, an animation director for Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell films, Patlabor 2: The Movie, The Sky Crawlers, and the anime sequence in Kill Bill: Volume 1, is in charge of the actual direction of the film. Oshii had similarly created the Blood: The Last Vampire and Jin-Roh – The Wolf Brigade films for others — Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Hiroyuki Okiura, respectively — to actually direct. Samurai Champloo and Kill Bill: Volume 1 animation director Kazuto Nakazawa, will design the characters, while Kazuchika Kise (Blood+, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Ghost in the Shell films) will supervise the animation process. The media company Pony Canyon is planning to offer pre-sale tickets at the Comic Market 75 event in Tokyo from December 28 to December 30.

The historical Miyamoto figure has directly or indirectly inspired several earlier manga and anime stories. Those stories include Toei Animation’s Wanpaku Nitouryou – Shounen Miyamoto Musashi television special (1982), Gosho Aoyama’s Yaiba manga and television series (1988-1993), Phoenix Animation’s Ninja Resurrection video (1988), Studio Comet’s Shura no Toki television series (2004), and Monkey Punch’s Musashi television series (2006). Perhaps the most popular manga based on Miyamoto is Takehiko Inoue’s ongoing epic samurai series, Vagabond.

Kannagi Creator Takenashi Undergoes Surgery, Recovers

The Japanese publisher Ichijinsha has posted an official notice on the health of Eri Takenashi, the creator of the Kannagi manga in Ichijinsha’s Monthly Comic Rex magazine. According to the notice, Takenashi had suddenly fallen ill after writing the draft for the manga installment in the December issue of Comic Rex, which shipped on November 9. She was immediately admitted to a hospital and later underwent a successful surgery. She is now recovering and her condition is improving.

After Comic Rex’s January issue shipped on December 9, there were reports that Takenashi had put Kannagi on hiatus because of the slander from the fan controversy over a story revelation in the December issue. Ichijinsha’s official notice declares those reports as false, as Ichijinsha already emphasized earlier this week. While Takenashi is still in the hospital, Ichijinsha’s notice says that she indicates a desire to return to writing.

Kannagi’s story centers around Nagi-sama, a goddess who come to life before an art student when he carves a statue from a Kannagi tree. The anime version just premiered in Japan in October, and fervent interest among the most hardcore fans have led to high prices for even fan club cards.
